TSC Awards Intern Teachers 30 Marks For Their Service
There is reason to celebrate for intern teachers as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has awarded them 30 marks advantage in the ongoing recruitment drive.
In the new TSC score sheet released that will be used as a guide in the recruitment of teachers this July. The Commission gave a directive that thirty (30) marks be awarded to applicants who provide evidence of having served as interns.
In 2020 TSC did not automatically take up intern teachers instead they were awarded ten (10) marks for serving as interns.
This meant that some had to be locked out as they were not able to compete with other candidates favourably because they had the advantage of having graduated earlier and as well as the quality of their academic certificates.
This forced the interns to work for another year for the Commission after they failed to be recruited of permanent and pensionable terms.
Fortunately however, TSC managed to renew the contracts of the teachers who did not get employed for another twelve months.
Salaries for intern teachers were also reviewed as secondary school interns were given a raise to earn Sh. 15,000 per month while their primary school counterparts took home Sh. 10,000 in 2019.
After that TSC did not stop there. They increased the salaries of the intern teachers by Sh. 5,000 more making the new salaries of interns to be Sh. 20,000 and Sh. 15,000 for secondary school and primary school interns respectively.
TSC’s advertisement has been only for Permanent and Pensionable terms this time. In May, June, the Commission announced that it was planning to recruit 5,000 secondary school teachers. Of these 1,000 slots were allocated for the deployment of P1 graduate teachers to high schools.
Besides, the Commission advertised the availability of 2,987 job openings for Primary schools and 927 vacancies for secondary schools as replacements for the teacher who had exited the service.
TSC directed interested and qualified candidates to submit their applications online through the TSC website: www.tsc.go.ke under the ‘Careers’ tab or via the link teacheronline.tsc.go.ke not later than 12th of July, 2021.
The announcement of awarding 30 marks to teacher interns has come at the most opportune time for teacher interns as they has been calls for the Commission to confirm the interns on Permanent and Pensionable terms.
The following is the official TSC recruitment advert for July 2021.
