Kereri Girls Sparks Controversy after Welcoming New Students with a Clean Shave
Kereri Girls located in Kisii County has admitted new Form One students with a clean head shave, leading to mixed feelings among members of the public and netizens.
In a video that circulated on social media, the students could be seen waiting in line for the barber’s clean shave before proceeding to complete the admission process.
The video also showed a periodic announcement explaining to parents and the new young learners that it is the school’s culture for all Form Ones to be shaved as they get admitted.
“Once again, I welcome you to Kereri Girls, for those girls who are here for the registration process but have long hair, the school’s policy is that you must have your hair shaved. We have barbers at specific locations to take care of that,” said the announcement.
The video led to mixed feelings among members of the public with some taking to social media to address the issue. Some said that the hair had nothing to do with the upbringing of the students.
Some netizens even went further saying that shaving lowers the learners’ self esteem.
“What has hair to do with good upbringing? This is just messing with their self esteem,” said one social media user.
“I never understand why Kenyan students have to be forced to shave their hair. It has nothing to do with the learners’ performance of behavior in school. It is a humiliating exercise,” added Thomas who revealed that he lives abroad where he sees how learners are treated differently there.
However, not all were annoyed by the practice as one netizen actually supported the move saying,” it saves the learners valuable time that they need to boost their academic performance.
