Laboratory launched to regulate GMOs
The Principal Secretary to the State Department for University Education and Research Amb. Simon Nabukwesi commissioned a Molecular Biology Laboratory last month at the National Biosafety Authority (NBA).
The laboratory is intended to regulate Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in Kenya.
Amb. Nabukwesi was speaking at the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) building located in Nairobi where he revealed that the laboratory will offer its services at reasonable prices because the NBA is the go-to place on matters pertaining regulation of GMOs.
“In Africa, Kenya is leading in research, development and commercial activities of Genetically Modified Organisms. Efforts have been made to develop the capacity of detection of approved GMO events and for aiding in surveillance to assure the public and build confidence in the safety of introduced GMOs,” said PS Amb. Nabukwesi.
The National Research Fund provided funds for the project which shall offer crucial services including supporting the government in safeguarding the safety of both human and animal health amidst the government’s ban on importation and consumption of genetically modified foods.
In addition, the laboratory will play an important role in the effective implementation of the provisions of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety bearing in mind that the NBA is key in the country.
The laboratory will also improve surveillance of GMO products to curb the possible breach of security via the use of biological agents by hostile non-state players who are currently active in the East African region.
The laboratory will also participate in the testing of products of emerging biotechnologies such as genome editing among others as well as in capacity building for students and scientists in research and institutions of higher learning.
“The Kenya Vision 2030 and the Vision’s implementation Medium Term Plans recognize the role of Biotechnology in addressing agricultural, medical and environmental challenges,” said PS Amb. Nabukwesi.
According to Amb. Nabukwesi, through innovation, biotechnology is key in fostering of economic growth and promoting the well-being of citizens.
Amb Nabukwesi also commissioned a Molecular and Microbiology Laboratory at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) on the 20th of June 2022 as well as a soil analysis Laboratory Facility at Rongo university on the 21st of June with both facilities being funded by the National Research Fund (NRF).
