Makerere University Unveils Boda Boda Study Course for June 2020
One of the oldest universities in Africa Makerere University, has unveiled a plan to start a study course for all Boda Boda riders from June 2020 as an effort to reduce and contain motorcycle road accidents.
The Boda Boda study course will be offered under the College of Education and External Studies (CEES) and is set to commence in June 2020.
According to Professor Paul Birevu Muyinda, the deputy principal College of Education, the course will be offered online to be accessed by the many riders.
“The Boda Boda study course will be mainly an online course,” said Makerere University’s Deputy Principal College of Education.
“The course will involve mobile learning and the use of applications to manage road safety and accidents,” Professor Muyinda disclosed.
Besides, Professor Muyinda said that the riders will also be able to acquire safety tips on entrepreneurship of their business and how to improve their transportation skills.
Development of the Boda Boda Study Course Curriculum
To develop the Boda Boda course curriculum, Makerere’s College of Education and External Studies (CEES) said it will partner with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC).
They will then involve the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Ministry of Gender for concrete ideas.
Establishment of this new course is part of the University’s response to improve research and develop new innovations after receiving 30 billion shillings (equivalent to Ksh. 800 Million or 8 Million USD) budgetary allocation from the Ugandan Government.
Adoption and completion of the Boda Boda study course by the motorcycle riders is expected to lower road accidents. It will also help the riders make more savings from their daily Boda Boda job hence improve on their economic status.
With this in action, road accidents will be expected to reduce and Boda Boda riders will be able to save their money for the future development of their statuses.
