Education Sector Gets 544.4 Billion Allocation in 2022/23

The education sector has received a Sh. 544.4 billion allocation in the 2022/23 budget proposal out of the total Sh. 3.31 trillion total budget.

The Cabinet Secretary for Treasury Ukur Yatani revealed today that the government is willing to increase access to quality education. This was during the tabling of the budget proposals in parliament.

The allocation to the education fraternity represents Sh. 23.9 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.

As compared to the 2021-2022 budget, the current amount represents an increase of Sh. 503.9 billion.

The Competency-Based Curriculum received an allocation of Sh. 1.2 billion while Free Primary Education (FPE) and Free Day Secondary Education got allocated a sum of Sh. 64.4 billion.

On the other hand, the feeding program received an allocation of Sh. 1.96 billion. The school feeding program was intended to keep learners in school more so in those areas threatened with food shortages or drought.

Sh. 5 billion has been also been allocated for examination fees waiver for Grade 6, Class 8 and Form 4 candidates.

To boost the recruitment of new the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been allocated Sh. 2.5 billion.

Integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in secondary schools saw an allocation reduction as compared to the Sh. 420 million was allocated last year.

Digital literacy program got Sh. 310 million while the treasury has allocated a total of Sh. 294.7 billion to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

University education and the Higher Education Board got Sh. 91.2 billion and Sh. 15.8 billion.

This should leave the education sector with happy faces with other education departments getting more funds to conduct their activities.
