Schools Shall Reopen If Kenyans Are Prepared, Sossion

There has been a mixture of emotions as Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary-general Wilson Sossion suddenly changed tone as he aired his perception on the status of school reopening.

Mr. Sossion put his focus on the Kenyan people and asked all Kenyans to prepare for the resumption of all learning activities.

In an interview with a local TV station on Monday, September 14, evening, Sossion said it was up to Education CS George Magoha to make a major announcement on the exact date of reopening.

“The framework of reopening of schools, the details and everything else will be shall be pronounced by the minister (Magoha). It will answer many questions and this is a disease that I believe the Ministry of Health will continue monitoring the trends even in schools and the health status of learners.” He said.

He appreciated the solidarity expressed by all stakeholders given the fatality of the disease and promised continuity of cooperation.

“It’s good the country is in solidarity on the approach to this issue given that this disease (COVID-19) is very infectious. We are not shy to express solidarity with the CS when he is leading and consulting us properly. We shall work innovatively, let Kenyans prepare, and if they do so then the details will be outlined and I think there will be no confusion,” Sossion said.

The nominated Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party MP said all the World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols should be followed to ensure the safety of learners.

On Sunday, September 13, at a church service in Bomet, Mr. Sossion argued schools were not ready to reopen in January 2021 as he still had reservations over the level of preparedness in learning institutions.

“We think if at the rate in which the sector is moving, the country and schools will not be ready for resumption in January, that is the truth in terms of preparations,” he said.

Magoha had hinted at reopening of schools earlier than the initially projected January 2021 date.

The senior government official said education stakeholders had agreed to consider reopening of learning institutions before the end of the year since the COVID-19 curve had been flattened.

However, the Cabinet Secretary said the final decision wasn’t up to him, but to the committee of experts selected to deliberate on possible resumption dates for studies in all institutions of learning.
