Rift Valley Delegates Officially Endorse Collins Oyuu to Challenge Sossion

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion’s competition is on the rise as teachers’ representatives from the Rift Valley endorsed Collins Oyuu to dislodge Sossion in the coming union elections.

Teachers from 21 out of the total 25 branches in the Rift Valley Region backed Mr. Collins Oyuu unanimously.

Mr. Collins Oyuu is the current acting KNUT national chairman.

At the beginning of this month, a Nairobi Employment and Labour Relations Court dismissed Sossion’s attempt to overturn his de-registration as a teacher.

The Teachers Service Commission had de-registered Wilson Sossion as a teacher.

Justice Stephen’s ruling dealt Wilson Sossion a huge blow as it meant that he now will not be registered back as a teacher.

Wilson Sosion has been at the helm since 2013 and he is hoping to retain his seat.

The decision to back Mr. Oyuu in contesting against Sossion was reached following a regional council in Eldoret on Friday.

The team dubbed ‘Team Change’ unveiled their candidate, Mr. Collins Oyuu to vie for the SG position. Mr. Oyuu’s deputy will be Mr. Hesbon Otieno and Rosalia Mkwanjala while Patrick Laringa will contest the chairperson’s post. Mr. Patrick Karinga’s deputy will be Stanley Mutai and John Wesonga as first and second vice-chairperson respectively.

National Treasury has been set for one James Ndiku with his deputy being Ali Abdi and Kennedy Nywanda while Mercy Kiambati and Mercy Ngugi will assume the positions of women representative.

Boniface Tenai, John Gitari and Fred Nguma shall act as trustees while Edward Olando shall represent persons living with disabilities.

“As teachers of this country we are organized and focused and come June we will have fresh blood in KNUT leadership. We will overhaul its leadership,” Eldoret West branch executive secretary Kipchumba Arusei said.

Wilson Sossion’s Deputy Hesbon Otieno said that there are paramount resolutions they have come at to restore KNUT to its former glory.

“The resolutions made in Eldoret will be a game-changer because KNUT has been in turmoil. Time has come for us to redeem it and change its image. We must restore the long-lost glory of union,” said Mr. Hesbon Otieno.

Mr. Oyuu on the other hand blamed the current KNUT sec-gen for his mismanagement and woes currently facing the Kenya National Union of Teachers.
