Blind Teacher with Blind Child and Wife Calls on TSC to Recruit Him

A blind teacher called Milton Wafula aged 32 is devastated after losing his father, Moses Naikopo who died four years ago in the village of Bisunu located in Bungoma County.

Wafula revealed that he has never recovered from the trauma of losing his father.

He revealed to the media that he was born healthy with eyesight but went blind three days later. His parents’ efforts to take him to various hospitals bore no fruit as he never recovered his eyesight.

“My parents could not afford to take me to a special school so they enrolled me at Lutaso Primary School.

“When I was in Class three a missionary from the Netherlands visited our school and my teacher told him my case. He agreed to sponsor my education at Kibos School for the Blind,” said Wafula.

Through the missionary’s help, Wafula joined Thika School for the Blind where he eventually graduated with a C-. Sadly, the missionary passed away later.

Wafula also revealed that his father had sold a piece of land and enrolled him on Mosoriot Teachers Training College in Nandi County. He graduated in 2019 after sitting for the examinations a second time in 2018 with the help of his younger brother.

Wafula’s father had eight children but he passed away before he could enjoy the fruits of Wafula to school. Wafula is the only one with formal education after being sponsored.

Despite having fees arrears Wafula revealed that the college issued him with a P1 certificate after speaking with the school principal and this helped him get a TSC number.

Whenever the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) advertises job openings, there are slots allocated for special schools for people with disabilities.

“I have missed three opportunities since I do not have the money to help me get the job. I am really frustrated,” he said.

Wafula appealed to the Commission to recruit him so that he can help his 67-year-old mother who is working on people’s farms as well as his two blind brothers.

Wafula is a certified English/Kiswahili teacher. His wife, Nekesa is also blind and the couple also has a three-year-old daughter who is also blind.
