Ministry Finalizing Preparations for Start of Form 1 Selection Exercise On 28th of May

The 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates are set to join Form One July 2021 once the selection has been done.

Top officials from the Ministry of Education are meeting soon to finalize the plans for the selection of Form Ones this year.

A broad-sectoral team is in Naivasha to come up with the best way for the placement of candidates to respective secondary schools.

The sectors from which the team is derived include the directorate of secondary education under the stewardship of Paul Kibet, a few from the Department of ICT, and personnel from quality assurance.

Sometimes, the Kenya National Examinations Council is represented as well as personnel from other State Agencies to ensure that the selection process is efficient and water-tight.

During the release of the 2020 KCPE examination results, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof George Magoha said that all the 1,179,192 candidates who sat for their KCPE will be admitted to secondary schools. This is in line with the government’s 100 percent transition policy.

CS Magoha revealed that Form One selection will take place on the 28th of May 2021 and that KCPE candidates will join secondary schools in the month of July.

In the past month, the Ministry of Education warned some Principals of national schools against interfering with the process of selecting form ones.

The schools were accused of selecting form ones before the time stipulated for the National Forms one selection exercise.

“The purpose of this letter is to ask you to inform the Principals of the listed schools in your jurisdiction to ensure that they only pre-select candidates who have chosen their schools as per the KNEC database. The National Selection Process will ignore the pre-selection of such candidates and place them in schools of their choice and on merit if this instruction is not adhered to,” said the Ministry of Education via a circular.

The schools that were warned on this are:

  1. Moi Tea Girls (Kericho)
  2. Utumishi Girls (Nakuru)
  3. Utumishi Academy (Nakuru)
  4. Moi Forces Academy (Nairobi)
  5. Starehe Girls (Nairobi)
  6. Starehe Boys Centre
  7. Moi Forces Lanet (Nakuru)

Between today and Friday of next week, the team is expected to analyze the available capacities in national, extra-county, county, and sub-county schools before the scheduled placement exercise next week on Friday.

The Ministry shows that there are 29,712 slots in all the 103 national schools.

123,400 more spaces are available in 531 extra-county schools and 142,358 slots in 1,031 county schools.

Sub-county schools (day schools) have a total capacity of 685,590 in all the 7,325 institutions.

Special Needs Education (SNE) secondary schools (35 in total) have a capacity of about 1,500 slots according to data from the Ministry of Education.  These institutions cater to students who have special education needs.

For SNE secondary schools, the selection is based on merit, the choice of the candidate, and the type of impairment.
