KNEC to Do Assessments for Grade 1-3, Class 5-7 This January

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is planning to conduct a school-based assessment of learning for Grades 1 to 3 and Classes 5 to 7 beginning from Monday 18th January until 22nd January 2021.

Dr. Mercy Karogo, the KNEC Chief Executive Officer, has revealed that the ultimate goal of the assessments is to identify gaps in learning that the prolonged holiday due to COVID-19 occasioned. Besides, the assessments should suggest interventions that to be utilized to address the existing gaps in learning as the learners are progressing through the second and third terms of their academic year.

KNEC will assess pupils in standard 7 in all subjects that are tested in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). These subjects are Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Science, and Social studies.

Pupils in classes 5 and 6 will be assessed in English, Kiswahili, Science, and Mathematics.  The other learners in grades 1, 2, and 3 will be assessed in Numeracy, Fundamental Literacy entailing English, Kiswahili, and Mathematics activities.

KNEC boss Dr. Mercy Karogo has implored school administrators and teachers alike to ensure that the integrity of the assessments is upheld. Besides, she said that learners should be given a natural environment in order to guard against variables that can influence the outcome.

“Please note that the reliability and integrity of the result of these assessments depend on the headteachers and teachers. You are therefore called upon to ensure that learners are provided with a natural environment in order to prevent extraneous variables that could affect their performance.”

As it was the case with Grade 4 and Standard 8, the administration of the assessments will follow the guidelines and assessment schedule that KNEC has provided.

The Guidelines KNEC has provided are accessible through the LCBE Portal.

Results for Grade 4 and Class 8 assessments

KNEC has already published the results for the assessment for Grades 4 and Standard 8 school-based learning assessments conducted in October 2020 when schools opened partially.

Schools can ACCESS their subject-specific results for Standard 8 from the LCBE portal. Data processing for Grade 4 is progressing well even though there have been delays in uploading the scores by some schools.
