2025 National Co-Curricular Activities Calendar Released by Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education has unveiled the 2025 National Co-Curricular Activities Calendar, detailing an extensive schedule of sports, arts, and academic events for primary, secondary, and special schools across Kenya. Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, the calendar includes activities such as sports championships, music and drama festivals, and academic competitions. Term I

The first term focuses heavily on sports, drama, and science fairs, with events running from March to April. Key activities include:

1. Secondary Schools Sports (Under 18)

  • Dates: 5th – 13th April 2025
  • Sports: Rugby 15s, Basketball 5×5, Athletics, Hockey, Handball, Cross Country, Swimming
  • Host County: Mombasa
  • Opening Ceremony: 7th April 2025 at Shanzu Teachers Training College (TTC)
  • Closing Ceremony: 12th April 2025

2. Kenya Science and Engineering Fair

  • Dates: 6th – 12th April 2025
  • Host Venue: Kangaru High School, Embu
  • Focus: Innovative projects showcasing STEM skills among students

3. National Drama and Film Festival

  • Dates: 7th – 19th April 2025
  • Host Venue: Afraha High School, Nakuru
  • Highlights: Gala concert on 15th – 16th April, and a State Concert on 18th April 2025

4. Kenya Teachers Colleges

  • Dates: 23rd March – 4th April 2025
  • Sports: Ball Games, Goal Ball, Athletics, Paralympics
  • Host Venue: Kibabii Diploma TTC, Bungoma
  • Closing Ceremony: 3rd April 2025

Term II

The second term emphasizes ball games, music festivals, and East African championships:

1. Secondary Schools Ball Games (Under 18)

  • Dates: 26th July – 3rd August 2025
  • Sports: Soccer, Volleyball, Netball, Rugby 7s, Badminton, Tennis, Basketball 3×3
  • Host Venue: Afraha Stadium, Nakuru

2. Kenya Music Festival

  • Dates: 1st – 14th August 2025
  • Host Venues: Meru School and Kaaga Girls, Meru
  • Highlights: State Gala on 13th August 2025

3. East African Championships

  • Dates: 15th – 25th August 2025
  • Host City: Arusha, Tanzania
  • Key Details: Action Days: 18th – 23rd August

Focus on Inclusivity

Special schools and junior categories have dedicated events to ensure inclusivity. Activities for students with disabilities are scheduled alongside mainstream events, reflecting the Ministry’s commitment to equality in education.

Primary Special Schools Athletics

  • Dates: 6th – 12th April 2025
  • Venue: Ziwani School for the Deaf, Mombasa

Special Schools Ball Games

  • Dates: 26th July – 3rd August 2025
  • Venue: Jomo Kenyatta High School, Nakuru

Government’s Call to Action

The Ministry has directed Regional Directors of Education to ensure wide dissemination of the calendar and facilitate its implementation. “Schools must prioritize these activities to enhance students’ talents while promoting national cohesion and cultural pride,” Dr. Kipsang emphasized.

Parents have also been encouraged to support their children’s participation in co-curricular activities, which are essential for building leadership, creativity, and resilience.
