42,500 Students Get Vetted For Bursaries in Kirinyaga County
Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru has revealed that more than 42,500 students are set to be vetted by the various Ward bursary committees
The bursaries will cover 32,397 secondary schools, 5,388 universities and 4,742 tertiary students.
According to Kirinyaga County Communication Department, the allocated bursary kitty is Kshs. 87 million more than what was allocated in the past year.
“These bursaries are aimed at enabling children from poor backgrounds to remain in school after enrolment. Institutions of learning need not send home those waiting for the bursaries as that would disrupt their learning,” said Governor Anne Waiguru.
The Governor assured that the County Government of Kirinyaga is committed to supporting education saying that it will improve academic performance and in the long run improve the lives of the youth in the County as well.
The plan is that those children who benefit from the bursaries because of after-school and tertiary education they can join the workforce or start their own businesses.
She also revealed that she knows Kenyan parents are experiencing financial hardships due to the tough economic conditions which have been exacerbated by global the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising cost of various commodities attributed to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
Tebere ward was allocated Kshs. 4.65 million with Kshs. 2.3 million being allocated to 1,025 secondary school students.
450 students in tertiary institutions and 351 from universities also benefitted from the scheme getting an allocation of Kshs. 1.4 million.
Nyagati ward got an allocation of Kshs. 4.65 million with 1,380 secondary school students receiving Kshs. 3.5 million. The 172 learners in tertiary institutions got Kshs. 522,000 while 196 university students got allocated Kshs. 613,750.
The governor also revealed that her government appreciated the role played by donor agents and especially banks for supporting education programmes in the county through the bursaries.
