Primary school teachers who teach in Grade 1, 2, and 3 shall attend a workshop under Tusome Early Grade Reading Activity which is a program of the Ministry of Education that supports English and Kiswahili literacy.

The Ministry via a message sent to targeted teachers said that the training will include all teacher in public schools who teach in the lower grades. A messages sent to one of the teachers is as shown below.

“Dear Teacher, Tusome Early Grade Reading Activity is a ministry of Education program that supports improvement of English and Kiswahili literacy outcomes for grades 1 to 3 learners in Kenya. Tusome plans to conduct a National Teacher training targeting all grade 1 to 3 teachers in all public schools in the country. For all grade 1 to 3 teachers, please, please send the words START TEACHERDETAILS to 24971 and answer all the questions in the survey. If you are currently not in grades 1 to 3, kindly share this message with the relevant teachers in your school. There is No cost as you respond to this sms. Kindly fill in the survey by 30th April 2021”

The ‘Tusome’ program (translated as “let’s read” from Kiswahili) is a partnership between the Government of Kenya’s Ministry of Education and the USAID.

The Tusome technical approach utilizes the research-driven learning materials, teaching methodologies that are proven, and an innovative feedback based on tablets and a monitoring system to improve literacy of 7.8 million pupils by the year 2021.

The current population in primary schools is estimated at 10.4 million children in both private and public schools.

The fast growth of the population in primary schools is largely attributed to the introduction of Free Primary Education by the Government in 2002 and other interventions.

As per information on enrolment in schools, Kenya is on track to achieve the Education for All (EFA) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Commitments by the year 2015.

Sub counties are set to issue training dates and venues for training teachers in their respective zones.

Tusome pays teachers who attend their bookshop amounts that range from Sh. 2300 per day to Sh. 2865 per day and takes at least two days of workshop attendance for the teachers.

However, there are doubts that the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) will make implementation of the Tusome program difficult.

Teachers were given the Tusome schemes of work and lesson plans as well as teaching and learning materials the first time the program began.
