Ikuu Boys Students Torch 4 Dormitories and Storm Out Of School

Learners of Ikuu Boys High School located in Tharaka Nithi County have stormed out of their school after torching four dormitories on the night of Sunday.

The school property was destroyed in the fire but fortunately, the fire did not harm any learner. The fire then reduced the four dormitories to mere ashes.

The principal of the School Mr Joseph Mbae revealed that the fire which broke out at around 11 pm destroyed the dormitories that housed more than four and hundred and eighty (480) learners.

Following the incident, 35 students have since been arrested in connection to arson. Chuka Police are still interrogating the students.

He then added that no injuries were reported among learners although he could not commit to giving any updates of the 243 learners who had deliberately left the institution.

The principal revealed that the school was in a peaceful mood up until the moment when the fire broke out after evening preps were over.

The principal said that he noticed some students outside of the dormitories via CCTV. He then rushed there only to find the learners breaking window panes. The principal then, in the company of the security guards and a few teachers attempted to control the unrest but their efforts were futile as they were outnumbered.  Mr Mbae then resorted to calling the local police for reinforcement.

However, he revealed that the police took a long time to respond and he was forced to drive a distance of 6 kilometres to pick up the police officers. By the time they reached the school the three dormitories had been engulfed in fire. The fourth dormitories were saved by firefighters.

“Around 243 learners out of the total 1,030 stormed out of the school and spent the night in the bushes. However, some did return in the morning,” Mr Mbae said.

Following the incident, the school’s board of directors decided to close the school until further notice and implored parents to counsel their children.

It has been reported that the students were protesting prefect harassment and poor administration.

Indeed some parents did reveal that their children had been complaining about harassment from prefects.

Break out of school fires around the country have risen to unimaginable levels with the Ministry of Education revealing promising to apply the full force of the law for students who are culpable of arson.
