KUPPET’s Demands to the Ministry of Education Ahead of Monday Reopening

The Kenya National Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has issued demands they want the Ministry of Education to be meet as schools reopen this coming Monday.

Akello Misori KUPPET secretary-general led KUPPPET in the address implored the Ministry of Education to republish the term dates for parents and school heads so as provide clarity and avoid confusion.

Misori said that there has been a problem concerning the capitation of funds remarking that the government did not release the funds in time.

“Even more important, the Ministry must expeditiously address financial constraints in schools ahead of reopening. As we speak, it is way behind schedule in the disbursement of capitation funds.

“Activities in many schools are closely grounding to a halt with headteachers and principals not able to meet some of their school’s obligations,” said KUPPET secretary-general Akello Misori.

The teachers’ union urged the Ministry of Education to address the teachers’ deficit in learning institutions at all institutions of basic education i.e. primary and secondary schools.

He also appealed to the government to supply public health facilities with the required COVID-19 management types of equipment including oxygen, ventilators, and medicines so as to boost the level of care for COVID-19 patients.

Akello Misori said in a statement that the Union was supporting the Ministry of Health’s scientifically proven COVID-19 control protocols and praised the government for the COVID-19 vaccination drive which has helped many frontline health workers and other crucial workers including teachers.

The policy of 100 percent primary to secondary school transition and new class establishment revealed a shortage of about 97,000 teachers.
