TSC Teachers to Get Pay Rise, Promotion in July 2020
TSC Teachers will get a pay rise and job group promotions coming this July 2020 after Parliament gave a green light for additional Sh11 billion budgetary allocations to Teachers Service Commission.
The legislators approved the additional amount to facilitate TSC fulfill phase four of the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
In the Teachers Service Commission’s plan, 100,000 teachers will be promoted. This includes the P1 primary school teachers and diploma teachers in Secondary Schools.
TSC to Employ 5,000 New Teachers
TSC will use Sh2 billion to employ 5,000 new teachers to help bridge the teacher shortage in the country following the 100 percent transition policy to Secondary schools.
Besides, Sh1.2 billion will go to the recruitment of 10,000 TSC intern teachers as opposed to the initial target of 40,000.
In early February 2020, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia presented to the National Assembly’s Education Committee a request of Sh15.4 billion for recruitment of 25,000 teachers.
Dr. Nancy Macharia was quoted saying, “we projected … recruitment of 25,000 teachers at a total cost of Sh15.4 billion.”
TSC to Execute the Last Phase of 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
The 2017-2021 CBA was arrived at as means of averting frequent teacher strikes occasioned in the country.
TSC implemented the first phase of the CBA 2017, the second 2018, while the third was executed last year on the 1st of July.
Parliament Approves Sh1 Billion to Train Grade 5 CBC Teachers
Other than salaries and promotions, the Parliamentarians allocated Sh 1 billion for implementation of the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Specifically, the cash will go into the training of Grade five teachers.
