Kenyan Teachers Raise Over Ksh 10 Million to Fight Covid-19
Kenya teachers under the umbrella of the Kenya Teachers Service Commission (TSC) have raised over Ksh. 10 Million to support the National Covid-19 Education Response Committee (NCERC) to fight Coronavirus.
In a letter signed by TSC CEO, Dr. Nancy Macharia addressed to Dr. Sara Ruto, the National Covid-19 Education Response Committee (NCERC), the Commission sent a Cheque of Ksh 10,296,024.00.
“Teachers Service Commission is deeply concerned about the spread of Coronavirus in the Country,” wrote TSC CEO.
“The Commission wishes to acknowledge your Committee’s tireless efforts in the fight against the Coronavirus and pledge to you our support,” added Dr. Macharia.
Ordinary teachers contributed Ksh 2,441,028.00 to the kitty as school Principals through the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) gave Ksh. 5 Million.
Primary School Head Teachers raised Ksh. 1 million sent via Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (KEPSHA).
Principals of Colleges under the Kenya College Principals (KECP) channeled Ksh. 200,000 as the TSC Secretariat Staff donated Ksh 1,654,996.
Teachers’ contributions will go along way in helping Dr. Sara Ruto’s Committee in chatting the best possible way to tackle the spread of Covid-19 in educational institutions.
On 12th of May 2020, the Ministry of Education through the Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha tasked the National Covid-19 Education Response Committee (NCERC) in coming up with solutions to open schools amid the pandemic.
The Committee has given Kenyans one week to submit their views on how schools can be opened. In addition to opening of schools, the views can be on matters of education in response to Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition to the opening of education institutions, the NCERC will look into Reorganizing of the school calendar, the fate of boarding schools, formulate how the poor can access education, and Health and safety measures for schools, among others.
All education institutions were closed after President Uhuru Kenyatta’s orders on Sunday the 15th March 2020. The orders were meant to help the Government curb the spread of Coronavirus.
