Government to Provide Facemasks and Meals in Schools

The government plans to provide facemasks, soaps, and sanitizers to students at a cost of Ksh. 2.1 Billion as schools are to reopen in January.

The budget details are in the post-recovery plan released by the National Treasury named Post-Covid-19 Economic Recovery Strategy (2020-2022).

The document details that between December 2020 and June 2021, an amount of Kshs. 500 million will be used to provide facemasks, soap, and sanitizers.

The government has agreed to spend Ksh. 28.8 billion in the construction of new classrooms and repairing and expansion of the existing infrastructure.

Additional teachers will be hired for Kshs. 10 Billion in the next two years. The school feeding program will be expanded for up to Ksh. 5.6 billion to cover more institutions.

These plans are part of the main agenda that will smoothen the running of schools as they reopen on January 4th next year.

The sector of education shall be the biggest beneficiary of the two-year stimulus plan as more money will go into primary, secondary, and university education.

This will come as a huge relief to parents who were worried about the cost of purchasing facemasks and sanitizers on their own.

The government also intends to support free education as they have set aside Kshs. 78.9 Billion for the next financial year.

Concerning the feeding program, Kshs. 5 bilion will be for nationwide expansion of the school meal program. Another Ksh. 500 Million will be used to implement comprehensive school health policies.

Another sum of Kshs, 1.1 billion is planned to assist learners, teachers, and education staff to deal with the post-trauma stress of COVID-19. How this is going to help learners

In summary, in the next two years, the Post-Covid Economic recovery strategy programmed intends to increase Net-Enrollment-Rate by developing a funding framework for both pre-primary and primary education.

“The program is intended to provide instructional materials and operational subsidy in public pre-primary and primary schools. As such, it will enhance the safety of learners by implementing the health protocols such as the provision of facemasks to all learners,” read the report.
