Finlay Company Limited Awards Kshs. 32 Million Scholarships to Students

A multinational Tea Company has awarded outstanding and worthy students from Kericho and Bomet areas with Kshs. 32 Million scholarship.

The scholarship will help them study undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs at both public and foreign universities in the coming academic year that starts this September.

James a Finlay Company Limited is headquartered in Kericho town and through the Finlay, Community Trust will help twenty-eight beneficiaries to pursue varied disciplines in public universities across the county with each learner receiving Kshs. 150,000 per year for the duration of their studies besides being given a laptop.

The trust also gave two students Kshs. 11 million Swire Masters Scholarship to pursue a Master of Arts degree in the United Kingdom (UK).

While presenting the students with the scholarships at a hotel in Kericho, James Finlay (K) Limited Managing Director and Trust Patron Simeon Hutchinson praised the Trust for reaching a major milestone, saying that the Trust’s investment in young people and collaborative efforts with communities to initiate infrastructural projects has led to its success.

James Finlay Company Limited General Manager Mr Smmy Kirui also attended the event. He said that the Trust gave the 28 students a Kshs. 21 million undergraduate scholarship while at the same time revealing that the Swire Masters Scholarship Program runs for a year and covers tuition and other program-related expenses.

Kirui said that the two students who obtained first-class honours in their BA degree courses are set to leave the country a week after the event to continue with their MA studies in the UK.

One of the recipients of the undergraduate scholarship Titus Kiplangat who is a former student at Kabianga High School in Kericho County said he was thankful to Finlay for enabling him to pursue his Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Civil engineering at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) after getting an A in his 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Five constituencies in Bomet County and Six constituencies in Kericho County were selected through a fair and competitive interview process which placed significant emphasis on academic excellence and student need.
