Primary School Headteachers Placed in Charge of Junior Secondary School till the End of the Year

The Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu has revealed that heads of primary schools will be in charge of Junior Secondary Schools in their respective institutions until the 30th of December 2023.

According to CS Machogu, this will only be on an interim basis.

This information was revealed at the Kenya National Examinations Council’s office in Nairobi during the release of the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

He said that a special committee will be constituted by the Boards of management of primary schools that domicile junior secondary schools.

“The Committee will spearhead the management of education and resources of the school. The head of the primary school that domiciles the junior school will serve as the secretary, while the chairperson will be a member of the committee,” said CS Machogu.

He also revealed that all private junior secondary schools will also be required to have Boards of Management and directors. This is according to the stipulations of Section 52 (a) of the Basic Education Act of 2013.

President William Samoeri Ruto’s Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) taskforce had recommended junior secondary school students be domiciled in the existing primary schools.

CS Machogu revealed that the government is set to send Kes 18 billion on capitation for junior secondary school students.

Every learner will be allocated a sum of Kes. 15,000 per year. Kes. 4,000 of the amount will be allocated to infrastructure development with laboratories high up on the priority list.

Kes. 9.6 billion will be spent this year with funds scheduled to cover two periods.

So far 14,000 public schools have been evaluated with 13,000 of them having met the requirements to host Junior Secondary School’s Grade Seven learners.
