Curriculum Implementation Committee Wants Removal of Grade 6 Assessment
The Cabinet Secretary for Education George Magoha shall give the final directive after receiving recommendations to remove the Kenya Primary Education Certificate (KCPE) exams by the Curriculum Implementation Committee.
The committee agreed to scrap off the national examination and replace it with a grade 9 alternative. This was after a retreat they held at Naivasha that ended on Tuesday, December 8.
The committee decided that students should not sit for national examinations after Grade 6.
Besides, the plan was of the view that students shall do the national Grade 9 examinations at the end of Junior Secondary School. The Grade 9 national examinations shall then, be used to place students in senior secondary schools.
The committee also recommended that students shall sit for national tests in Grades 4, Six, Nine, and Twelve.
On the other hand, Grade 12 tests will place students around the country at various universities and colleges.
Students are to spend two years in Pre-primary school, six in primary school, three in junior secondary, and three in senior secondary school under the CBC.
The latest development comes at a time the country is grappling with the issues of how the assignment of learners to secondary schools shall happen after the abolishment of exams for Grade 6.
CS Magoha directed the committee on Friday, December 4, to draw up guidelines for posting children to secondary schools.
The CS also made it clear that a transition roadmap on how to dive secondary schools into junior and senior secondary was crucial to him.
The 8-4-4 system was 16 years old and in comparison, the new education system that the Ministry of Education introduced wanted a 17-year stay in schools before schools were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
