Distinguished Scholars Gather for Final Send-off
Members of the academic fraternity recently convened to bid farewell to Professor Obonyo Digolo, a prominent figure in the Department of Education. The solemn event served as a tribute to Digolo’s extensive contributions to teacher training and educational research in Kenya.
The gathering featured several high-ranking scholars, including Prof. Gunga, Dr. Mitema, Prof. Origa, Prof. Ouma, and Dr. Lwande. These individuals have been instrumental in shaping the pedagogical landscape at the University of Nairobi and beyond.
A Legacy of Excellence in Teacher Training
During the ceremony, colleagues and former students highlighted the impact of the attending professors on the current generation of educators. Prof. Origa, a key figure at the memorial proceedings, was specifically recognized for his mastery of Instructional Methods in Mathematics—focusing on the specialized art of teaching the subject.
Origa’s cultural influence was also noted, as he is the educator immortalized by legendary musician Musa Juma in the song “Odundo.” Former students recalled his dedication to mentorship, particularly in securing teaching practice (TP) placements in reputable schools for his students.

Tributes from cohorts spanning the late 1990s and early 2000s emphasized the long-standing influence of these scholars. Prof. Gunga was remembered by alumni as a pivotal philosophy lecturer at the Kikuyu campus, while others credited the department’s collective leadership for their professional foundations.
The passing of Prof. Digolo marks a significant transition for the department, yet the presence of his peers at the send-off underscores the enduring strength and camaraderie within Kenya’s academic institutions.
