17000 Primary School Teachers set to be deployed in January

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to deploy more than 17,000 practising primary school teachers who have Degree and Diploma qualifications to teach in junior secondary school (JSS).

These teachers joined accredited institutions and graduated with a Diploma or a Degree certificate in secondary option and whose certificates were acknowledged after they were submitted to TSC.

The Commission wants to deploy these teachers to teach in junior secondary schools next year. The junior secondary school comprises Grades 7, 8 and 9.

Further, the Commission will also employ more secondary school teachers with Diploma and Degree qualifications to teach in Grades 7, 8 and 9 in junior secondary school.

In a State House meeting, it was also agreed that since the curriculum for the JSS is secondary, the recruitment of the 30,000 teachers will prioritize unemployed teachers who have qualifications to teach in secondary schools.

These will involve teachers who have a Diploma or a Bachelor of Education.

Besides, a proposal has also been submitted to TSC to recruit teachers with a higher diploma for technical and vocational education training (TVET) institutions to teach pre-tech subjects in junior secondary school.

This means that TSC will advertise vacancies for the same this month of December to allow for applications. Schools are set to reopen for the new academic year and the newly-recruited teachers are supposed to be reporting to their new stations at that time.

60,000 secondary school teachers already underwent training on the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) in May.

The Commission is also planning to retool teachers who will be tasked with handling the CBC in junior secondary classes next year.
