US Teacher Fired After Hanging Black Baby Doll in Classroom

FLORIDA, USA — A 63-year-old middle school teacher in Florida was fired on Wednesday after a viral video showed her hanging a Black baby doll by the neck in front of her students. The incident, which has sparked outrage among parents and drawn the attention of international educators tracking classroom conduct on platforms like teacher.co.ke, occurred after the teacher reportedly grew frustrated with her class’s lack of attention.

Hillsborough County Public Schools confirmed the immediate termination of Karen Whitmire Savage, an educator at Barrington Middle School in Lithia. The Florida Department of Education is also reviewing her teaching certificate for further disciplinary action.

Viral Video Sparks Outrage

The distressing event came to light after a 14-year-old student, Noah, recorded the incident on his mobile phone. Noah reported that Savage became frustrated when students were not paying attention to the pictures she was showing.

According to the teenager, the teacher confiscated the doll from a classmate before walking over to a charging station. She then used an electrical cord to tie a noose around the doll’s neck and suspended it from the classroom’s television monitor.

“She took the charger cord and wrapped it around the baby’s neck and tied it,” Noah said. “Everybody started telling her it was wrong and racist to do that. And then she said it was just a joke, and then she took down the doll”.

Historical Trauma and Parental Shock

The imagery immediately drew parallels to the dark history of racial violence and lynching in the United States, prompting severe backlash from parents and civil rights advocates.

Nina Williams, Noah’s mother, described going into a panic after receiving the video in a family group chat while her son was still at school.

“That is not something that I expected my children in 2026 to ever have to deal with seeing — a lynching, whether it was real or fake,” Williams stated. “The whole image is just horrific”.

Williams noted that the display emotionally impacted students of various racial and cultural backgrounds. She confirmed that civil rights attorneys have already contacted her family regarding potential legal action against the district.

District Takes Decisive Action

Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent Van Ayres strongly condemned the display earlier in the week. Following a brief investigation, the district removed Savage from the campus and officially terminated her employment on Wednesday.

“We want to reiterate that we do not tolerate conduct of this nature,” a district spokesperson said in a statement. “We took immediate action and responded swiftly to ensure the situation was handled appropriately”.

The school district has made counselors available to support students affected by the classroom incident. As international education communities, including Kenyan teachers following updates on teacher.co.ke, debate the boundaries of educator conduct and cultural sensitivity, parents like Williams are demanding permanent revocation of Savage’s teaching credentials across all states.
