Police Searching For 10 Men Who Assaulted a Young Girl
Police from West Pokot are currently looking for ten men who are suspected of assaulting a 12-year-old girl from Sigor after she refused to marry an elderly man.
According to Marich Police Station, the young girl’s father and nine other men beat up the minor in abid to force her to accept being married after the suiter had offered ten cows in return.
“On Wednesday a group of men approached her and assaulted her trying to force her to accept the marriage,” a police officer said to the Standard.
The police revealed that the minor had been taken to the elderly man’s compound and a celebration was conducted. However, when the men got drunk, the young girl ran away to the police station.
“The group of men decided to have a good time after completing the marriage successful. The minor said that she waited till they got drunk and ran away,” said a police officer.
“We rushed to the suitor’s home at once but unfortunately we found that they had eloped us. We are searching for the culprits,” added the police.
In addition, Sigor OCPD also revealed that the minor was set to undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
The suspects are being sought with one of them being the girl’s father.
In a separate incident, Embu police rescued a young girl who was forced to undergo circumcision. The young girl’s mother was nabbed.
The mother had been taking care of the 9-year-old after she had undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Residents of Kaigi village had reported to the chief over the incident whereby the young girl was sent to stay with her grandmother following the cut. As such. the young girl is said to have been hidden following the illegal cut.
