Kapkolei Girls Closed After Nighttime Riot in Nandi
Authorities have indefinitely closed Kapkolei Girls High School in Nandi County after students rioted and fled the institution late Sunday night. The unrest, reportedly sparked by grievances over school management, prompted swift intervention from education officials and local security personnel.
The incident occurred just days after a devastating arson attack at Utumishi Girls Academy claimed the lives of 17 students, heightening national anxiety over indiscipline and safety in Kenyan boarding schools.
Students Flee the Compound
A viral video capturing the Sunday night exodus showed the Nandi-based students fully dressed in games tracksuits. The girls were recorded screaming as they ran down a dark road, forcing their way out of the school premises.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko sharply condemned the students’ actions, pointing out the severe security risks of abandoning a guarded compound at midnight.
“This is a big no. What about their own safety?” Sonko stated. “No grievance is worth putting young lives at risk. Let us choose dialogue, discipline, and peaceful solutions.”
Demands for Stricter Education Policies
The disturbing footage has reignited fierce debate among Kenyan parents and education stakeholders. Citizens are raising alarms over the normalisation of school vandalism and strikes.
While some Kenyans advocate for the enactment of stringent laws against delinquent students, others are reviving former Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s proposal to abolish boarding facilities and transition to a day-school system.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and local authorities are conducting a comprehensive assessment of the Kapkolei Girls incident. The school remains closed indefinitely pending the conclusion of official inquiries.
