Kochia village residents In Homabay County have called on the police to hasten their probe into the death of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate shortly after she gave birth.
Velma Anita Ochieng, a 19-year-olf KCSE candidate at Nyajanja Mixed Secondary school passed on Monday the 28th of September at Homabay Teaching and Referral Hospital where she had gone to deliver.
Her aunt Shellah Ayaga revealed that the expectant candidate had started experiencing labour pains the night before and was rushed to the medical centres to facilitate safe delivery.
“Velma was experiencing severe pains when she was admitted to the maternity ward,” said Shellah.
Ayaga revealed how her family members had begged the doctors in vain to urgently attend to Velma.
She blamed the hospital staff for their negligence and called on the authorities to carry out an investigation into the same.
According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital Dr Peter Ogolla, the medical examination revealed that Velma had died while in the early stages of her labour pains.
The CEO brushed his staff off blame saying that they had discharged their duties as they put the patient in bed and monitored her progress after every four hours.
According to a report from the doctor who attended her, the caesarian surgery on Velma was successful and she returned to the ward with her newborn baby.
he also said that later she complained of abdominal pains and was given some painkillers.
“Medics discovered high blood pressure which they tried to stabilize but it was all in vain as her vital organs weakened very quickly,” confirmed Dr Ogolla.
He refused to comment on the cause of death until a post-mortem was conducted to reveal the actual course of death.
On her part, the Governor of Homabay County Gladys Wanga was among the first people to send their condolences to the bereaved family.
