It has been reported that students in some Ugandan universities are stuck in their hostels, with nothing to eat.
At least 300 students in Makerere university, Kyambogo university and Uganda Christian University have been trapped in their hostels since the 18th of March, 2020 when the COVID-19 lock-down started.
The students could not leave and go back to their home villages since the Ugandan Government had issued a ban on public transport.
Mr. Boss John Bruce, the chairperson of Uganda Christian university Students Electoral commission, who is also a forerunner in the campaign to solicit food, confirmed having 158 students stranded in the hostels.
Mr. Ibrahim Ssendagire, a student from Makerere university said there are 52 students stranded in the hostels.
The Kyambogo university Guild vice president confirmed that over 20 students are stuck, while Mr Patrick Odongo, the guild speaker of Makerere university Business School, reported 100 cases in their hostels located in different Kampala suburbs.
A tweet from Ms. Esther Birungi about a friend of hers who was starving and in need of assistance, drew so much attention from the public that came to her rescue.
Afterwards, she received knowledge from internal sources that hundreds of students were starving and needed help, after which she superheaded a wide movement to appeal for funds to support students.
Now, over 300 students are worried and uncertain on how they will survive in time to come, because the lockdown keeps extending further than they initially expected. Among them is a student called Akwi, who has been surviving on only posho and sukuma wiki.
Another student who asked to remain anonymous said that her friends resorted to prostitution, not because it is their way of life, but for survival’s sake.
Kyambogo university staff recently solicited money among themselves and bought five tonnes of posho and soap which they gave to the government task force. They were later granted permission to distribute the items among their students, which they did.
