Top KCSE Student: God and Hardwork Made Me Great

Simiyu Robinson Wanjala from Murang’a High School was the best student in the now released 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination. Wanjala got the grade A with a mean score of 87.334.

Speaking from his parents’ home in Buruburu, Robinson revealed that even though he performed well from Form 1, he never expected to be the best candidate in the country.

To avoid his anxiety, he had considered staying away from Television as the results were being released yesterday.

“We were having lunch, and I wanted to be far away from the TV…I only rushed to watch when I heard CS Magoha mention his name,” said Wanjala.

“When I heard his name I could not believe it. I am still not settled for sure,” he added.

According to the student, the results reflected the huge effort he invested in his studies.

“There were many challenges along the way obviously, especially in form four,” he explained.

“When corona came, I prayed to God and asked him to repay me for all the hard work I had put in,” said Wanjala.

The only person not shocked by the results was his mother, Mercy Simiyu who revealed that she had expected her son to perform excellently in the examinations.

She said that her son is disciplined and hardworking and that she expected him to be the best student.

“I had prayed to God for my son when the results were being announced, and I knew he would be announced as the top candidate,” said Mercy Simiyu, Robinson’s mother.

Robinson’s dad, Mr. Wanjala who was smiling and understandably elated, said that although he expected his son to be in the top ten, he did not expect him to be the best student in the whole country.

“My son has really done well despite the challenges brought by the pandemic, we are very excited as a family,” he said.

Robinson completed his High School at Murang’a High School after finishing his Primary School Education at Gachie primary school.

He revealed that he intends to study medicine at the University of Nairobi.

“I chose medicine and engineering. I now hope to study medicine at the University of Nairobi,” explained Robinson.

He advises students and anyone else to never stop dreaming, to put God first and ignore what people say.

The second student in the country was Wasonga Allan from Agoro Sare High school located in Oyugis, Homa Bay County.

Out of the top ten (10) slots, six students came from Kenya High School.

Out of the 747, 161 candidates who sat for the KCSE, 143, 140 students scored a C+ and above. C+ is the minimum grade to join university.

The results were released by the Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha at the Mtihani House today.
