Student Who Faked His Kidnapping Gets Conned By Woman Who Spiked His Drinks

Police have nabbed a medical student who is alleged to have faked his kidnapping in order to extort money from his parents.

The suspect, Edwin Kamau, is a 23-year-old student at Makindu Medical Training College. He is alleged to have hidden on Sunday, blocked his father’s phone before calling his mother and claimed to have been kidnapped and asked for money for him to be released.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect had informed his mother that his alleged kidnappers had requested Kshs. 70,000 to secure his release. He is believed to have blocked his father and opted to call his mother probably because he felt his mother was the easier target.

“His distraught parents reported the matter to police officers who immediately launched a manhunt for the kidnappers. However, the calls persisted with Kamau telling his mother that his kidnappers were on the verge of eliminating him,” revealed the DIC via a statement.

The parents resorted to saving their son’s life and sent the first instalment of Kshs. 10,000 on Wednesday the 6th of July which Kamau used to entertain himself with a woman he found at a Thika nightclub. The woman later spiked his drinks and robbed him.

According to the DCI, the woman is a ‘drink spiker’.

“Once he received the initial instalment, he went to a club in Thika to irrigate his throat and make merry in the company of a babe he had met. As fate would have it, the woman turned out to be a Pishori admin who laced his drink with an unknown substance and stole the cash,” added the DCI.

Upon regaining consciousness, Kamau called his parents again on Thursday claiming that his kidnappers wanted money and they then sent him a further Kshs. 40,000.

However, Kamau did not know that the DCI detectives were following his number and later arrested him for questioning. He claimed that he was trying to recover fees for the last semester which he had squandered.

He was found with Kshs. 38,600 in his shoes which he had withdrawn and hidden.

“He revealed that he had been ‘kidnapped’ alongside two other students whose parents had paid their ransoms,” said the DCI.

Kamau is currently being held at Kayole Police Station awaiting being arraigned in court.
