Secondary School Teachers and NCIC to Foster Peace during the Elections
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) are set to work together with teachers of secondary schools all over the country in a bid to create awareness among learners against being used to cause violence in the forthcoming national elections.
Teachers from all the countries who are patrons of Amani clubs in their schools attended a workshop that lasted two days in Machakos over the weekend and discussed many issues chief of them being how to prevent learners from being used to cause violence in the coming national elections. Instead, they want to ensure that learners become peace ambassadors instead.
The Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Chairperson Kahi Indimuli said that youths have been victims of violence during elections and all efforts should be made to ensure that they are made aware of the importance of enhancing peace in their communities.
“We are moving towards the election period. We want to use the Amani Clubs to educate our learners to stay away from activities that could threaten peace…they should be peace ambassadors in their communities,” said Kahi Indimuli.
According to Mr Indimuli said that recently, schools have experienced several cases of students causing fires and it was, therefore, crucial to involve learners in ways of resolving conflict within and outside the schools.
Indimuli said that the Amani Clubs had not been started in all schools and implored those yet to establish them to do so as one of the ways of promoting peace.
The Deputy Director of NCIC Mr Kelian Nyambu on his part said that no learning can happen in schools if there is no peace.
He said that schools can act as the foundation for promoting peace across the country.
