Regular and SNE Teachers attend KNEC’s CBC Training in Hundreds

The Competency-Based Competency (CBC) training started yesterday and will end on the 23rd of July 2021.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) organized the training that will take five days to complete and is for Primary school teachers who teach in Grades 3, 4, and 5.

Teachers including Headteachers and their Deputies, Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), and CBC Champions attended the training in venues in the respective counties.

“The number of participants will be 200 drawn from schools implementing the Age-Based (Regular) Curriculum and should include five (5) CSOs, five (5) QASOs, five (5) Headteachers, five (5) Deputy Headteachers and CBC Champion teachers,” said the KNEC Director of Staffing, Joseph Mugele.

KNEC then assured participants that they will cover meals the teachers will be taking which include two rounds of tea alongside snacks, two water bottles as well as internet at a cost of Sh. 700 per person, per day.

Training materials will be provided at a cost of Sh. 10,000 while the Examiner will also cover transport costs for all the participants.

The teachers who are participating in the training have been teaching in Grade 3, 4, and 5 in schools that are implementing the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) for learners having a visual, hearing, and Physical Impairments. Teachers from schools Implementing Foundation and Intermediate levels of stage-based Curriculum Pathway are also part of the exercise.

Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof George Magoha graced the training workshop for the tutors in Mombasa.

During the visit, CS Magoha revealed that the Ministry of Education had supplied Grade 5 textbooks to all primary schools that are prepared for the roll-out of the CBC class in the first term which begins later this month.

According to the CS, schools that are yet to receive the textbooks shall receive them latest the 26th of July, 2021.

Besides, CS Magoha gave assurances to schools that the government shall disburse the rest of the money for schools before the reopening of schools for the first term of the 2021 academic year later this July.

The Ministry of Education together with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) are working together to conduct a piloting exercise for the teaching of indigenous languages and foreign languages in selected primary schools in the first term of the 2021 academic year when schools resume learning.
