KUPPET Oppose Review of NHIF Act Citing Disadvantages on Teachers

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) is against the intended review of the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Act.

The Union has voiced its disapproval of the intended changes as the proposed changes leave teachers at a disadvantage.

KUPPET Secretary-General Akelo Misori together with Omboko Milema, said that the review of the NHIF will be a wrong turn if any changes happen on the NHIF Act without considering the views of the teachers. Kenyan teachers are the biggest beneficiaries of the insurance scheme.

The leadership of KUPPET wants two separate boards to be constituted and mandated to manage the NHIF. Besides, they warned that any additional plans to transform the NHIF from a fund scheme may put teachers at a disadvantage as well as other workers.

“In the review of the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) notwithstanding their separate health insurance schemes teachers are the bedrock of NHIF funding.

“KUPPET will recommend creating two separate strategic boards to manage NHIF. One of the boards would manage the fund to enroll contributory workers while the other would be responsible for intelligent, indigenous, vulnerable, and other groups,” said KUPPET Secretary-General, Akello Misori.
