KUPPET asks Government to Release Calendar for Schools’ Games and Sports

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called on the government o release the calendar for school sports and games.

This comes after the Cabinet Secretary for Health Mutahi Kagwe directed that sporting activities resume in schools following a notable reduction of COVID-19 infections.

President Uhuru Kenyatta suspended all sporting activities in schools were suspended in March of 2020 to curb COVID-19 infections.

KUPPET’s Nakuru executive Secretary Mr Duncan Macharia implored the government to release the calendar of events since COVID-19 infections have been reduced, for proper planning.

“There is not enough time. By now the ministry should have released it. We need to engage the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, drama festivals, music festivals, and the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair,” said Mr Macharia.

According to Mr Macharia, sporting activities in schools help in engaging learners as well as identifying and developing their talents.

“School games help us to identify talents. Through sports we develop the next athletes and sports and women who can participate in global events,” he added.

Besides the school and inter-school co-curricular activities, tournaments in schools also comprise of Copa Coca Cola and Chapa Dimba na Safaricom

In addition, Mr Macharia said that sporting activities help in keep learners busy and reduces indiscipline among learners.

“When learners are involved in sporting activities and other co-curricular activities, cases of school unrest will reduce,” said Mr Macharia.
