Education CAS Zack Kinuthia’s Comments on School Reopening Attracts Intense Backlash

Education Chief Administrative Officer (CAS) Zack Kinuthia attracted intense backlash following his comments on the reopening of schools. He revealed that the government is not keen on prioritizing social distancing when schools reopen in January 2021.

The CAS was speaking in a panel that comprised of Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) National Chairman Kahi Indimuli and Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Wilson Sossion this Monday.

“The Government is not going to use social distancing as a bottleneck. This is an admission that if we were to use social distancing as is expected of 25 students in every class, then we will lock out two out of three of the 16 million learners in Kenya.

“The government is not keen on enforcing social distancing. It is going to ensure strict adherence to children wearing masks, water and sanitation shall not be comprised,” said Zack Kinuthia.

Besides, the CAS added that social distancing is not the greatest way of containing COVID-19 but stressed that children wearing masks and proper sanitization is the way to go.

Many people were involved in a backlash against Zac Kinuthia’s comments with Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkommen among them.

“Some blogger working at the Ministry of Education said in an interview with Sofia Wanuna that once schools open the government is not going to enforce social distancing.

“He added that social distancing will not prevent corona. Is that a new health directive from the Ministry of Health?” wondered Murkomen.

The Ministry of Health has been at the forefront of campaigning for adherence to wearing of facemasks, proper sanitizing, and social distancing. Some of the guidelines set even included a reduction in the number of passengers in Public Service Vehicles(PSVs).

“I wonder what kind of example the CAS Education is showing to the rest of ours. The government only suspended political gatherings when cases starting rising again… and now this?

“I totally feel there should have been a better way of talking about this as the safety of our children is of utmost importance once schools reopen,” added Meable (not her real name) in an interview with Teacher.co.ke.
