CS Magoha: Students Who Burn Schools To Be Jailed and Marked

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has issued a warning to learners who are involved in destroying school infrastructure.

The CS said that besides paying for the damage they caused, they shall also be punished in court and held criminally liable.

Prof George Magoha revealed that learners involved in these vices will be jailed to prevent others from engaging in such acts. He added that the crimes will be recorded in a database. This will restrict opportunities for those learners in the future.

The CS added that the database shall put restrictions on transfers to other schools, joining institutions of higher learning, and employment opportunities. This shall affect their lives.

Speaking after conducting distribution of masks to pupils of Mwiki primary school in Ruiru Sub-County on Monday, the CS said that since there have been calls for more collaborations among prefects, teachers, teachers on duty, and discipline masters, cases of arson in schools have reduced.

“Any child who is over the age of eight years is liable to criminal prosecution. Other than paying for damages, they will not be able to criminally get away with it. Again, we will have a database of learners who are involved in these arson cases, and they will be followed up in their future lives,” said the Cabinet Secretary for Education.

On how learners are prepared for examinations, CS Magoha said that expectant girls who are preparing for the national examinations shall be given a conducive environment to do their papers.

The CS said that via chiefs and their assistants, the Ministry of Education has been able to get pregnant girls who had not reported to the school and assured them of their support during the time they shall be doing their exams.

“Only one percent of learners, mostly pregnant girls have not reported to the school. We have knowledge of where they are. Some have delivered and we shall rehabilitate them in school. We are keen to give them a comfortable environment to sit for their examinations even if you deliver during the testing period,” he said.

Regarding support that the government shall give this particular school with a population of 3885 pupils, the CS said that the government will expand the school once they get a suitable piece of land to reduce congestion in the most populated school in Kiambu County.

Area MP Simon Kingára said that they have identified a piece of land of around nine acres of land which shall be converted to public land to reduce congestion in the school.

The MP also said that they have constructed another school one kilometer away, which they will open in July.

“This area has more than 90,000 learners and the NG-CDF is overwhelmed. We welcome the government’s intervention to reduce congestion in the school,” added the area MP Simon Kingára.
