The Ministry of Education, Feed the Future, Kenya Livestock Market Systems and Mercy corps, Sports and Social Protection commenced a back-to-school campaign to add to the government’s efforts of ensuring children are back in schools.
On Tuesday, representatives from the three groups begun a week-long meeting of stakeholders from Turkana North, Turkana West, and Turkana Central sub-counties.
The representatives are from ward and sub-county administrators, area chiefs, and sub-county directors of education were implored to spread the information as intake is ongoing in schools this January.
The first three meetings were held at the respective sub-county headquarters on Tuesday, while roadshows and sensitization on the door to door basis started on Wednesday.
In one of the meetings held in Lodwar, Chief Officer in charge of education Pauline Lokuruka said that education revealed that education was facing a big problem in Turkana because of the low enrollment. And pupils failing to return to school. This is after schools closed in March and remained shut for long periods because of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“The two categories of education institutions under the county including ECDE centers and vocational training centers of the county are also under the obligation to record 100% return to school after schools reopened,” said Lokuruka.
The Chief Officer said that over 50 youth in Turkana had already benefitted from the vocational training program via the scholarships that Tullow oil, KCB Foundation, and Toyota Kenya support.
79% of students in Turkana Central Sub-county have returned to schools in the 87 primary schools, twenty secondary schools, and 2 vocational training centers in the region.
