Learning Boosted As Schools Get Funds from the Government

The Government has boosted learning in schools as it has invested a lot of resources to improve the learning environment in schools.

Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang revealed that the government has released over Sh. 30 billion this year alone as capitation to schools to develop infrastructure.

“This year we have released Sh. 15 billion as capitation to secondary schools and Sh. 4.6 billion to primary schools,” said Dr. Kipsang.

Dr. Belio added that Sh. Billion more has been set aside for developing infrastructure in schools.

“The resources have come in handy and enabled school administrators at the grappling with infrastructural challenges in order to address social distancing in schools,” he added.

In addition, Dr. Belio said that every year a huge amount of money is set aside for maintaining and improving, and at the moment, Sh. 2.4 Billion has been allocated for secondary schools, 300 Million for primary schools, and another Sh. 300 million for the low-cost boarding schools that are in hazardous counties.

“So far the sector of education has used 27 percent of its budget just to ensure learners study in a conducive environment,” said Dr. Belio Kipsang.

The PS  recognized the contribution by partners including World Bank that has released Sh. 8.2 Billion for infrastructure development in 30 counties that had challenges with education.

On the reopening of schools, the PS said that by Tuesday schools had recorded a turn-out of 95percent. The PS assured that this would scale up to 100 percent by next week.

“We have realized that our learners are happy to be back in school and as a Ministry, we will strive to recover time lost and regularize our programs into the new calendar,” said PS Dr. Belio Kipsang.

While visiting schools in Nandi to monitor learners and adherence to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, Dr. Kipsang congratulated his fellow PSs across the country to monitor how schools are progressing and ensure learners are safe.

“We have had three PSs in every county in the last two weeks checking and ensuring that our children have reported and are comfortable,” noted Dr. Kipsang. He then visited Kapnyeberai Girls, Terige boys, Nandi Primary, Kapsisiywa, and Chepterit Secondary schools.

The PS urged continued collaboration between both levels of government to ensure the safety of learners in schools during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This will be by providing face-masks, sanitizers, and clean water for hand washing for the most vulnerable pupils.

“The government through the Ministry of Health has provided Sh. 7.5 million masks, KCB has provided 1 million masks, UNICEF 750,000 masks targeting the poorest learners,” said Dr. Belio Kipsang.

Concerning the Economic Stimulus desks making program, Dr. Kipsang said that about 67 percent have been delivered and the rest would be handed over to schools by next week on Monday. He implored education officials to do the paperwork properly so that contractors of the desks are paid their dues promptly.

“So far desks worth Sh. 19 million have been delivered but only Sh. 5 million has been paid. Going forward, payment will not take more than 48 hours after all the paperwork is completed correctly,” he assured.
