Akello Misori: KUPPET’s Walimu Solidarity Sacco Up and Running

According to the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary-General Akelo Misori the union’s Savings and Credit Cooperative Sacco has been registered and is now running.

The KUPPET Sec-Gen also revealed that the Sacco will come in handy for teachers who are members of the union.

“We have registered our Sacco, Walimu Solidarity Sacco, which is now running. The creation and launch of the SACCO will be quite useful for teachers,” said Akelo Misori at the KUPPET’s 23rd Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) that was held in Eldoret National Polytechnic on December 18, 2021.

According to the KUPPET National Executive Board (NEB) manifesto document, the Walimu Solidarity Sacco was formed after the conversion of the National Governing Council Welfare Fund to a Sacco. The Sacco will mobilize the savings of members and create a special fund to cushion teachers during strikes.

The Sacco is set to supplement the members’ ability to withstand strikes via the creation of investment vehicles to mobilize savings and resources to sustain the union in the wake of emergencies.

“Tapping lessons from teachers’ unions in Ghana and Swaziland, KUPPET has sought to launch a Sacco which is going to be completely financed by KUPPET.

In the ADC, Akello Misori pointed to the recent development in developing the KUPPET Sacco which began in August last year in equipping all officials of the union and employees with the latest skills for leadership.
