Non-Governmental Organization to Plant 115000 Trees in Public Schools
A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has begun an initiative of planting 115,000 trees in all public schools located in Shinyalu Constituency located in Kakamega County.
Through their manager Martin Lusuli, the Ikana Maendeleo Foundation has pledged to plant 500 tree seedlings in 230 public schools located in the constituency. The move is intended to ensure that they contribute to the government’s efforts of mitigating the effects of climate change and curbing global warming.
“Many of the seedlings are indigenous so as to promote a clean environment and boost the availability of water to our people,” said Lusuli.
The programme of the NGO was launched at the Shukulu Primary School on Friday the 11th of November 2022 and has been approximated to cost more than Kshs. 6 million.
The official revealed that they will fully involve learning institutions and members of the local communities in order to make them own the initiative and also inculcate and encourage the spirit of environmental conservation amongst other learners and members of the local communities.
“We expect schools and members of the respective communities to own these programmes by ensuring that the trees are well taken care of,” said Lusuli.
Besides, he said that the organization has as at that moment already started receiving support from Shinyalu’s Member of Parliament (MP) Fred Ikana.
“We have started receiving salaries and allowances from Hon. Ikana who is our patron, directly to our bank account and we are using it to help the needy and carry out initiatives such as the ongoing tree planting initiative,” added Lusuli.
The Member of Parliament (MP) declared his full commitment towards availing funds to the foundation saying that he was satisfied with the income that he got from his business enterprises.
