200 School Heads Potentially Facing Charges for Overcharging School Fees

210 school principals are set to be arrested and charged for over-charging school fees leading to a huge burden on parents with the exorbitant levies.

The National Parents Association Chairperson Nicholas Maiyo condemned the alleged principals’ act saying that this was uncalled for and it was not according to the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Education on fee structures.

“We parents have a huge problem and right now as I am talking, more than 200 heads of schools are charging more fees than what is recommended by the Ministry of Education. They will soon be arrested and taken to court over the same. National School students are required to pay Sh 45,000 while County and Extra County schools are both required to pay Sh. 35,000. Parents should not pay more than the required fee,” said Maiyo.

Maiyo revealed that some schools have fee structures that are higher than what the government recommends and any school heads who will be found culpable will face the full force of the law.

“Most of the schools have levies such as bus fees, remedial activity fees as a way of siphoning money from innocent parents. Parents should not agree to this uncalled for charges. Why should they pay more yet the coronavirus has rendered most of them jobless?” he wondered.

Besides, he urged parents to ensure they settle their fee balances on time for schools to run efficiently.

“I have been informed by some school heads that some parents do not pay school fees. This could paralyze learning in schools. We should pay school fees on time,” added Maiyo.
