Pupil dies after being sent home for Kshs 100 Fee Arrears
Joy Nawire, a pupil attending Otimong Primary School lost her life in her war home after being sent home to collect Kshs 100 fees arrears.
A speeding car hit the learner who lost her life on Tuesday, February 15 leaving her family member distraught and are now demanding justice for their girl.
“I was told that she had been sent home for arrears of just Kshs 100. I have since informed the school about it and the school promised to stand with us. Shools should not be sending learners home. They should instead give learners small notes to take to parents,” said Joy’s mother to NTV Kenya.
Alpha Patrick, who is an uncle to Joy called for justice and implored the government to find ways of finding better ways of getting school fees from parents.
“Learners should not be sent home once they are in school. There is no need to send them back because minors may not understand traffic rules. Most of the time parents do not have money,” said Patrick.
Misleading information?
According to the Busia County Director of Education Thaddeus Awuor, Joy Nawire had been sent home to collect her birth certificate to be used in updating her details on the National Education Management Information System registration (NEMIS).
“What has been said in the media is not true. Learners were told to go to school with copies of their birth certificates or cards of baptism for entry into NEMIS. This kid had not brought her and felt shy and once the teacher had left her classroom she rushed home to collect hers,” explained Mr Awuor.
In a related incident, two learners who used to attend Michuki Technical Training Institute drowned in River Mathioya after going out for a picnic which turned out to be a deadly incident.
The duo was part of the bigger group of learners who had gone hiking at Karuga waterfalls on Sunday, the 16th of January where they lost their lives.
One of the learners fell into the water while posing for a photo. Following this, a male student jumped into the river in an attempt to save her life which proved unsuccessful as both of them were swept away by the currents of the stream.
