Kisii University Students Praised for Sensitizing Inmates
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has praised Kisii University students of Law for their humane and selfless act of sensitizing inmates about Kenyan Law.
While at the Kisii Prisons and Correctional Centre during a week of awareness held by the Law students, the LSK Nyanza Region Branch Chairperson Gideon Nyambati stressed the need of enlightening members of the society about Kenyan Law.
According to the LSK Nyanza Region Branch LSK Chairperson, he will partner with Kisii University to strengthen the judicial abilities of the young Law students.
“We shall recommend some of the sharp brains from this University to sit and determine some legal cases within the advice of the bench,” said Nyambati.
The awareness week that came to a close on Friday provided an opening for paralegals from Kisii University and the Kisii Law Courts to meet the remandees and suspects at the Prison and share the challenges they face in their pursuit of justice.
Nyambati pledged to work with other teams that have the same intentions as him to educate members of communities about Kenyan Law in order to curb crimes in society.
The Kisii University Law students were led by Kisii Law Courts Prosecutor Mr Paul Kimutai who listened and informed inmates about procedures in Kenyan Courts, the skills and roles of a paralegal officer in the legal system and the position of the law on Gender-Based Violence.
Criminal procedures, principles governing law, labour and succession matters were among the issues discussed during the awareness week.
“This has been a big eye opener for most of us who are ignorantly rotting behind the bars,” said Anne Nyomenda, one of the inmates.
Manga Children’s Remand and Rehabilitation Centre was the other centre visited by the paralegal team.
Remandees were given bread, soap, toilet paper and sanitary towels (to the ladies) to boost their morale during the exercise.
