Primary school headteachers in Meru held workshops with the aim of improving the performance of pupils in Mathematics and Social Studies.
The school heads belonging to the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association held capacity-building workshops at Igembe, Tigania and Imenti with teachers handling those subjects brought together.
According to KEPSHA-Meru Chairperson Bernard Kiraguh, the workshops were inspired by the low mean score recorded in the two subjects.
Kiraguh was speaking at Kaaga Girls Secondary school where they held a workshop.
According to the KEPSHA Chair, the county recorded a mean score of 244.68 in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education with 48.59 in Maths and 47.99 in Social Studies.
“The two subjects pulled us down to a mean score of less than 250. That is why we are trying to find ways of improving them and maintaining good performance in the other subjects,” said Kiraguh.
According to the KEPSHA-Meru Chair, their main goal was to achieve a mean of at least 255 and more than 50% in the two subjects.
Among the sponsors from the private sector who attended the workshops were Targeter Publishers, Solution, Trans-nation Sacco and Equity Bank.
The stakeholders pledged to support the cause of improved performance in this year’s national examination.
Targeter CEO Peter Kiarie said that the company which primarily published learning materials will send experts in the two subjects to mentor teachers on how to improve their performance.
The company also rewarded the top-performing schools in the county and motivated the poorest students by providing them with free learning materials.
On her part, Loreen Kaimenyi who is the marketing manager at Solution Sacco said that her organization will continue to financially support teachers in order to help improve them and deliver their work.
For Trans-Nation Sacco, Betty Kairuthi said that they are also looking to find ways of motivating teachers and students to improve the performance of the county.
