The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued new guidelines to be used in the ongoing registration of KCSE, KCPE and qualifying test examinations in 2023.
In a statement issued on Monday the 13th of February 2023, the KNEC directed all candidates’ names to be entered in the order they appear on their birth certificates.
They must also enter the right gender of the learners, and year of birth before indicating the individual subjects they wish to register.
If the candidate has any special requirements or disabilities, they must also fill out this information depending on their different categories like vision, hearing or physical issues.
Registration of learners is mandatory and started on the 1st f February 2023 and will end n the 30th of March 2023.
The Council has already communicated that there will be no late registration of learners for the national examinations.

REGISTRATION OF 2023 CANDIDATES FOR KCPE, KCSE AND KCSE QUALIFYING TEST
Registration of 2023 candidates for KCPE, KCSE and Qualifying test commenced on 1st February 2023 and ends on 30th March 2023.
Please note and ensure accuracy of the following:
- Correct spelling and order of candidates’ names as documented in birth certificates.
- Gender
- Year of birth
- Subjects registered for
- Information on different categories of candidates with special needs and disabilities (i.e. Visual impairments, hearing impairment and physical impairment).
N/B: There will be no late registration.
According to KNEC, the KCSE Qualifying Test (QT) is a test designed to assess a candidate’s ability to sit for the KCSE examinations.
A candidate with a primary certificate other than the KCPE as well as a foreign primary certificate obtained after less than 8 years in primary school is the one targeted for the examination.
The examination is registered online or at the office of the County Director of Education.
The KNEC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Njeng’ere recently called on school principals to fill out registration forms on behalf of learners and send them to KNEC.
Besides, he said that no candidate will be allowed to sit for their examinations if they are not registered.
“The first step in administering a test is to register applicants,” he said.
Schools have been given two months to complete the registration of learners for the national examinations.
According to the Ministry of Education, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) will be held between the 6th and 9th of November 2023 while the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will be held between the 10th of October and the 1st of December 1, 2023.
