Linah Anyango teaches Biology and Chemistry at Changamwe Secondary School in Mombasa and she is now 11 years in the teaching profession. She has been shortlisted in the top 50 in the Sh. 100 million annual Global Teacher Prize.
She was shortlisted among the top 50 from over 12, 000 nominations worldwide that included applications by teachers from more than 140 countries in the world.
Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2020
The award is in its sixth year and is the biggest award as they come of their kind. The Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2020 partners with the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This is in a bid to achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal Four of ensuring quality education is provided for every child and that teachers are a top priority of every governments’ agenda.
Assistant Director-General UNESCO said, “Every child deserves an inspiring teacher and inspiring teachers deserve wide social recognition. As we enter what must be a ‘decade of action’ on education we have partnered with the Global Teacher Prize because it’s such a powerful advocate for the critical role teachers play in society.”
Global Teacher Prize Recognizes Exceptional Teachers
The Global Teacher Prize bases recognition on exceptional teachers who have done great advances in their contribution to the teaching profession and also extra contributions other than just teaching in the society.
By recognizing the efforts of exceptionally devoted teachers who have made a great impact in their profession, The Global Teacher Prize will reveal to a great extent how important teachers are to society at large.
Tabichi, last years’ winner has brought a sense of optimism in the country and while it is too early to start giving Linah any felicitations, she was recognized from over 12,000 nominations who will reduce to just 10 come June 2020.
On Monday 12 October 2020, the ten shortlisted will then be invited to London at the Natural History Museum for the award ceremony where the Global Teacher Prize Academy will choose the winner. The winner will be announced live on stage.
Teacher Tabichi’s Message to Linah Anyango
Tabichi, wishing Linah all the best in her pursuit of the Trophy, said, “I am so proud that a Kenyan teacher has been shortlisted for the Global Teacher Prize 2020. Winning the prize last year was such an honor, but more than that it was a tremendous platform to help me promote STEM learning among young people in Africa. Linah Anyango is doing that in the incredible work she does every day and I wish her all the best this year.”
Anyango tried all she was able to do to bring to the fore optimism among students in her school from the moment she started as a teacher 10 years ago. She started a cultural club that paved the way for students to appreciate each other’s culture and the value of diversity. This, in turn, made it possible to have peaceful interaction and eliminated radicalization.
Changamwe Secondary School, where Linah Anyango teaches, had two groups of girls in the National Science Fair last year.
Names of Other Five Africans on the same Nomination List
She is among just five Africans who are on the list of 50. The others are Olasunanmi Opeifa (Nigeria), Mokhudu Machaba (South Africa), Trust Matekwa (Zimbabwe) and Rosemary Nyirumbe (Uganda).
