The Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF) has awarded 148 students who sat for the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) scholarships to boost their education.
Beneficiaries of the Kshs. 22.2 Million scholarships have been selected from 47 counties across the country.
During the awards of the scholarship, the Ministry of Education (MoE) Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr Sarah Ruto said that the scholarship will play a big role in helping the students access quality education and retain learners in school as part of the universal education agenda.
The CAS also implored the students to make good use of the award to secure the better future that they desire through education.
“The scholarship will rekindle hope among the beneficiaries who would otherwise miss secondary education opportunities due to their disadvantaged backgrounds.
“Access to quality education will give both academic and life skills to enable the students to navigate the world of employment,” said Dr Sara Ruto.
On his part, the JKF Managing Director Mr David Mwaniki said that around 11,000 students have benefitted from the scheme costing the foundation just over half a billion shillings so far.
“The foundation is currently supporting 490 students in various secondary schools in Kenya,” said Mr Mwaniki.
On the other hand, the Chairperson of the JKF board, Ms Stella Samboja said that the selection of the beneficiaries was done in a transparent manner to ensure that only those who qualified are the ones who were awarded.
This year, the selected students comprised 104 boarders and 44 day-scholars. The scholarship will fund their education from Form One until they complete secondary education.
JKF has been offering scholarships to needy but bright students since it was founded in the year 1968.
