Fire Burns Down a Moi Suba Girls Dormitory

A fire has burnt down a Moi Suba Girls dormitory high school located in Migori County a day before the reopening of schools for the second term.

The fire broke out at around 7 pm and affected 68 students after all their belongings were completely destroyed in the fire.

Members of the surrounding community tried to put off the fire using fire extinguishers and water but their attempts were futile as the building was burnt to the ground.

Migori County Director of Education Jacob Onyiego confirmed the incident and told members of the media that the cause of the fire had not yet been determined but investigations are ongoing.

Investigations have begun and we must trust the security personnel to find out what caused the fire. We are lucky that not the student was in school at the time and that this will give time for arrangements to be made, however little, on how to accommodate those who were occupying the affected dormitory when they resume learning,” said Onyiego.

On her part, the school’s Deputy Principal Oyier Milka said that the fire started in the evening after masons who were building in the neighborhood raised an alarm and attracted Good Samaritans who tried their best to put the fire out using fire extinguishers and eve called the county fire engine that rived late and failed to salvage anything.

“We shall have an alternative place to accommodate the affected students whom we expect to report to school from today evening,” said Milka.
