Team University from Uganda has been trending in Kenya for the last few days following Johnson Sakaja’s clearance to vie for Nairobi County’s gubernatorial seat.
The institution was not that popular before Johnson Sakaja’s much-disputed academic credentials came into the limelight. Questions were asked of the Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant’s degree certificate owing to doubts over its legitimacy.
Team University started as Team Business College (TBC) in the year 2001 and offered training courses for accounting students. TBC was started by Tushabomwe David, Balikuddembe Joseph Kigongo and Rugaba Sam Kindyomunda.
“Three Certified Public Accountants, Tushabomwe David, Mr Balikuddembe Joseph Kigongo and Mr Rugaba Sam Kindyomunda, founded the institution in 2001 mainly offering training in accounting professional courses, especially ACCA, at that time renting space from Bat Valley Primary School,” Team University revealed.
After five years TBC expanded its setting to a specialist university in 2006. The following year, the Ugandan government granted the college interim authority to operate before it was licensed in 2010 to become the first private degree-awarding institution in the country.
At the moment of writing its article, Team University is mandated to award Undergraduate Degrees (Bachelors), Post Graduate Diplomas, Post Graduate Degrees (Masters and PhDs), Vocational Courses and training professional qualifications.
Sakaja has been embroiled in an overly public conflict over his academic credentials which ended with him being allowed to vie for the gubernatorial seat of Nairobi County.
Kenyans have mostly known Johnson Sakaja as an alumnus of the University of Nairobi (UoN) and were taken by surprise when the aspirant was revealed to have graduated from Teams University with a petition having been lodged in court that challenged his academic credentials.
Alex Musalia, the petitioner, argued that the Nairobi Senator had illegally acquired his academic certificates from the university located in Uganda to fake his path to the gubernatorial seat.
