Six Universities Get Kes. 140 Billion Grant from the British Council

The Government of Kenya has announced a donation worth Kes. 140 billion from the British Council intended to assist six universities in the country.

The grant is aimed at cushioning the institutions against the challenges of underfunding and allowing them to expand their academic programmes.

The speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula revealed the information during his acceptance speech after he was awarded an honorary degree by Kibabii University.

According to Hon. Moses Wetangula, universities in Kenya are currently experiencing financial problems and donations from the British Council will come a long way to helping address the institutions’ problems.

The universities set to benefit from the financial kitty are Kibabii University, Moi University, Jomo Kenyatta (JKUAT), Kenyatta (KU), and the University of Nairobi (UoN).

During the university’s 7th graduation ceremony, Wetangula expressed his gratitude for the honorary degree and said that the grant would reach the accounts of the university soon.

He also said that the donor-funded program would not be delayed.

Among the attendees of the event were Stanbic bank CEO, Joshua Oigara and the principal secretary for higher education Dr Beatrice Inyangala.

Dr Inyangala reassured the universities that school fees would not be increased and urged graduates to carry the name of Kibabii University high in the job market.

During his acceptance speech, Wetangula condemned the Supreme Court’s ruling concerning the LGBTQ community and termed it immoral and unacceptable for people of the same gender to engage in sexual activities.

he condemned social perverts and those who are not able to distinguish between male and female species in life adding that they have no place in society.

The grant from the British Council to six universities in Kenya will address the financial challenges that the institutions are facing and enable them to expand their academic programmes.

This will trickle down to learners and lecturers and ultimately boost the education sector in the stated universities.
